The Social Medial and Critical Care (SMACC) conference came out of the Free Open Access to Medical Education (FOAMed) movement. FOAM stands for free medical education for anyone, anywhere at anytime. It’s one objective is to make the world a better place. “FOAM should not be seen as a teaching philosophy or strategy, but rather as a globally accessible crowd-sourced educational adjunct. It provides inline (contextual) and offline (asynchronous) content to augment traditional educational principles.”
There have been two hugely successful SMACC meetings in Australia. This is in part because of the engaging, entertaining and inspiring speakers from around the world. It is also due to the fantastic community of doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and physician assistants passionate about emergency medicine and critical care. This year the organizers are bringing SMACC to Chicago June 23rd to 26th. Check out the registration brochure for all the details.
SMACC is very supportive of students. One exciting aspect of the Chicago meeting is the Student Competitions for a chance to win free registration. The first competition is SMACC the Musical. They are looking for the best “SMACC-ified” musical number or parody of a popular song promoting the SMACC meeting.
Eve Purdy is a 4th year medical student from Queen’s University and on the SMACC student organizing committee. She is a super star student interested in all things medicine but especially emergency medicine, rural medicine, medical education and social media. Eve is the creative force behind the excellent medical student blog Manu et Corde.
We decided to give you an inspirational example called SMACC Chicago Cup Song. It is a parody of the Anna Kendrick Cup Song from the movie Pitch Perfect. Your video should be between 30 seconds and 6 minutes in length. There is no limit on how many people can participate in the video but only up to three students will win a ticket per video. First round deadline is December 30th, 2014 so get your entries in now. There will be a second opportunity with submissions due by February 15th, 2015.
